Learning in Schools - The Parent Curriculum Experience Survey

The Scottish Assembly of Parents and Carers (SAPC) has today published findings from our recent Learning in Schools engagement work, bringing together the views and experiences of parents and carers across both primary and secondary education in Scotland.

The work explored how families experience learning in schools today, including:

  • understanding of learning and curriculum
  • flexibility and individual learning
  • reporting and communication
  • digital learning
  • parental engagement
  • support for different learners and pathways

A total of 177 parents and carers responded across the two surveys.

The findings show that parents and carers are engaged, thoughtful and keen to support learning, while also highlighting areas where families feel greater clarity, confidence and partnership are needed.

While experience varied, common themes emerged around:

  • understanding what children and young people are learning
  • confidence that learning reflects individual strengths and needs
  • clarity around balancing digital and practical learning
  • making reporting clearer and more useful for families
  • strengthening communication and parental engagement

Parent Partnership and Next Steps

As part of this work, the Assembly has also highlighted opportunities for continued collaboration with parents and carers around areas such as reporting, communication, curriculum understanding and digital learning.

The findings reinforce that parents and carers want to work constructively with schools and education partners to support positive learning experiences for children and young people across Scotland.

Thank you to every parent and carer member who took the time to complete the surveys, share feedback and contribute to help shape national conversations around education in Scotland.
