Helping shape Scotland's National Breakfast Club Offer

Helping shape Scotland’s National Breakfast Club Offer

The Assembly has recently been working with the Scottish Government’s School Age Childcare Team at an early stage in the development of its plans for a free universal breakfast club offer for primary-aged children across Scotland by August 2027.

We held two online discussion groups, including a dedicated session with parents and carers of children with additional support needs, with families from rural, urban and mixed communities contributing. Parents shared their experiences of current breakfast and childcare provision and discussed what needs to be considered around affordability, staffing, food, ASN and disability, transport, flexibility, existing childcare providers and making sure children themselves help shape the offer.

A huge thank you to our members who gave their time and shared their experiences, and to the Scottish Government School Age Childcare Team for involving our parents and carers at this early stage and listening directly to their views. We look forward to continuing to work with the team as the plans develop.
